Brian Blessing and Cam Stewart take a look at this week’s PGA and European Tour action on the golf podcast. The 2019-20 PGA Tour season begins with A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, while the European Tour is in the Netherlands for the KLM Open. Bryson DeChambeau is listed as the favorite to win the PGA Tour event, while Patrick Reed is favored to win in the Netherlands. Listen to the latest episode as Brian and Cam break down these tournaments on the latest episode of The Betmaker Show – PGA Golf Betting Odds Picks Preview
A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier
The field for the Greenbrier features 156 players and there are a lot of rookies looking to win their first event. Viktor Hovland made his PGA Tour debut last seasons, but this will be his first season as a full PGA Tour member. He finished in the Top 20 in his last four events last season. He is listed as the second choice in the betting odds at 14-1. There are a few big names in the event, but none of them are among the top betting choices. Former major winners Bubba Watson, Zach Johnson, Jason Dufner, Jimmy Walker, Keegan Bradley and John Daly are each listed at odds of 25-1 or higher.
Since this is the new season, it will be the first event that uses the new PGA Tour’s adjusted cut line which will be the top 65 players and ties. It is worth noting that none of the previous 54-hole leaders has gone on to win the title. Last year it was Kevin Na coming from behind to beat Kelly Kraft.
Cam is looking at taking some big long-shots this week, including some International players that are not always on the radar. Cam also points out that Hovland is a player to watch this season and Hovland is Cam’s top pick of the week.
Brian has a couple of players he is looking at to contend this week and players to take in the golf match-ups. KLM Open
In the European Tour event there is no question that Patrick Reed is the stand out player, as he is the only player listed at single-digit odds. Thomas Pieters and Sergio Garcia are the next two choices on the PGA betting board. The KLM Open will be shifting to a different course this season, as they will play The International in Amsterdam.
Brian and Cam point out that when a PGA Tour regular goes over to play a European Tour event, and the player is listed as the favorite, that player is worth a strong look and that is the case with Reed this week. It should be noted, however, that Reed really didn’t play that well last week in Hamburg, finishing in a tie for 36th.
The player to watch this week might be Thomas Pieters, as he won this event in 2015 and he is in solid form with a win at the Czech Masters and a tie for 12th at the European Masters and a tie for 20th last week. Cam and Brian talk a little about Joost Luiten and both would be surprised if he wins this week. It should be noted, however, that Luiten has made 13 starts in his home tournament and won twice, in 2013 and in 2016, but Luiten has not had a top ten finish in any event since the British Masters in May.
